North Caicos Turks and Caicos Islands
This lush 40 mile (60km) long island lies just 12 miles (18km) northeast of Provo. North Caicos is the greenest of our islands with more rainfall than the other Caicos Cays. Many residents keep small garden plots of vegetables and fruit trees. Paved roads lined with shady trees and virtually no auto traffic make scooters and bicycles a great way to tour the island. Auto rentals are available.
Population is concentrated into four settlements. Sandy Point features a boat landing just opposite the resort island of Parrot Cay, a beautiful beach and the island§s best snorkelling can be found close by at Three Marys Cay. Observe a large osprey nesting site on the cay. On the way to Kew is Cottage Pond, a 160 feet (50m) deep fresh water “sink hole” surrounded by lush ferns and vegetation.
Wades Green was one of the most successful plantations of the Loyalist era. Here visitors can tour well preserved ruins of the great house, the overseer§s house and walls. A look-out tower provides views for miles.
Whitby includes small hotels, several restaurants and a beautiful stretch of beach. Photo enthusiasts and nature lovers alike will marvel at the West Indian Flamingos on Flamingo Pond.
Bottle Creek is the largest settlement with homes built along a ridge facing deserted Bay Cay. An eco-lodge and restaurant at Belmont offers vacation accommodations and tours.
You can reach North Caicos by small plane, boat or the ferry which leaves Walkin Dock five time daily (3 times on Sundays and holidays). Call TCI Ferry Service for tickets and times. Book tours of the historic areas with The National Trust.
