Ambergris Cay Turks and Caicos Islands
Ambergris Cay is an 1100 acre privately owned island lying south of South Caicos. The island was used as a whale lookout during the mid-1800s and the Turks Island whaling days. There are now several palatial private residences, utilities to supply them and the longest lit, private runway in the Caribbean. The surrounding reef and coral heads are fabulous for diving and fishing, but hazardous to boaters. The developers ran into financial troubles and the development has stalled for the time being.
Little Ambergris, lying less than a quarter mile to the west, is uninhabited, except for birds and iguanas.
