Medical Services in the Turks and Caicos Islands

Providenciales has excellent medical facilities for such a small island nation. Day to day medical care and emergency services are handled by several private clinics and the Government clinic offering UK trained doctor services, optometrists, chiropractic, dental services and a decompression chamber.

Associated Medical Practice, aside from the government clinic, is the oldest established medical facility, and has well equipped offices on Leeward Highway. Three British and Canadian trained doctors and an emergency room physician staff the clinic as well as a consultant gynecologist, optometrist, chiropractor and two dentists. The recompression chamber and CT scanner are located at this clinic and a well stocked pharmacy.

Grace Bay Medical Centre’s well equipped premises at Neptune Plaza house a British and a Canadian doctor, a midwife and nurse. The staff has extensive years of experience and a well stocked pharmacy.

When on vacation, it is always a good idea to pack any medications you require. However there are now several pharmacies on Providenciales, and between them you are likely to find all your vitamins and any medications prescribed by doctors here. If you have special medications, find out in advance if they’re available on-island.

The most common travel ailments include sunburn, dehydration and insect bites. It is adviseable to use a sunscreen at all times you are outdoors. Your fluid intake will need to be more water, Gatorade and juices than you are used to at home due to the sun and the wind. Insect bites can be prevented by closing your doors in the late afternoon and using a spray insect repellent.

We hope you don’t have an emergency while you are here but if you do the clinics are capable of stabilizing most conditions and transferring the patient by air-ambulance jet to a hospital in Florida. The doctors will make house calls and hotel calls if requested even in the night for serious cases or pain cases.

Visitors would be well advised to check that their Insurance covers them for repatriation costs before they arrive.
