It's easy to get around on the Islands. Anyone, over 18 years old, holding a valid driving license from home can rent a scooter. Depending on the rental agency, you must be 25 in order to rent a jeep or auto. Rental insurance is advised. There is a $15 government tax on each rental contract.
Remember to drive on the LEFT, you'll get the hang of it right away! Relax, we have no traffic lights, no traffic jams and no place to go in a hurry. The maximum speed is 40 MPH, 20 MPH through the settlements. Speeding tickets carry a hefty fine. Most of the main roads are paved. Leeward Highway has been completed as a dual carriageway with traffic circles at main intersections. When approaching a traffic circle the driver on your right has the right of way. Side roads and back roads are simply cut from the coral rock and can be bumpy. Drive carefully over potholes and rough road edges.
Directions are easy, ask anyone or follow our island maps. Be cautious of people walking in the roads. Be careful at night, remember to dim your high beams and don't drink and drive! Seat belts save lives, so please wear yours. A seat belt law is enforced, the fine is $60 for each unbelted person.
Cars and jeeps are in high demand during the winter months when we receive the greatest amount of visitors. It is adviseable to reserve a vehicle prior to your arrival in order to avoid disappointment. Visitors staying in any accommodation other than an all-inclusive will most likely want to have a car available for at least a few days during your vacation. (Expect to pay approximately $85 and up per day for your vehicle.)
There are plenty of comfortable air-conditioned taxis to carry you to wherever your destination is. Your hotel desk will call for you or you can call personally. Taxis are now metered. Many taxi drivers will give informative tours of our wonderful scenic island. Fares can vary for this service so be sure to negotiate a price before-hand. There is no rule for tipping but 15% for personable service is appreciated.
Domestic air service is provided to most of the inhabited islands in the TCI on a daily basis by SkyKing.
