Turks and Caicos Trip Reports

The Turks and Caicos - Visitor's Trip Report

Beachbabyboo’s TRIP REPORT appeared in the September/October 2006 issue of Where When How!

Hi everyone! - My husband and I recently returned from a weeklong vacation at the Royal West Indies Resort, unit 123. I was hesitant about writing this report and letting more people know about this great unit and the great island of Providenciales, because I want to keep it “our own little secret!”

reader trip report

We flew in from Texas and were on Provo by 1pm on Sunday. We arrived at our room and the manager, Elaine, showed us around. The room is basic no frills, but it was clean and equipped with really everything you could need. The location made it the best value, in my opinion, on the island.

Just FYI, the two things the room did NOT have were: 1)An alarm clock (for when you need to get up for an early morning excursion, or for an early flight home). 2) A large cooler for sodas and beer to take on the beach (they had a small cooler, but that only fit about 2 bottles of beer).

Below I categorized some of my personal restaurant recommendations, fun things to do on the island, and some information you may find helpful.

Beachbabyboo’s Bites!
• Coyaba - the best thing here was their appetizer slow cooked jerk chicken leg, extra spicy. It was dee-lish and there were about 15 different flavors going on inside our mouths with every bite!
• Magnolia - their dessert of warm chocolate cake and vanilla ice cream was decadent!
• Mango Reef - great casual meals here at moderate prices. We ate a few dinners and a few lunches here, and one breakfast that only cost us $7! They also have great pina coladas here - delicious rum and I think they use coconut ice cream in the coladas!
• Da Conch Shack - their spicy cracked conch was the best thing here - absolutely tantalizing tender, and flaky! Yum.
• Sharkbite - only had cocktails here, and just FYI their Wed. night fish and chips special is now $10.50. They have great souvenir t-shirts here.
• Tiki Hut - nice casual fare right on the Turtle Cove Marina.
• Barefoot Café - nice breakfasts, the French toast was great. They have scrumptious grits here, too!
• Caicos Café - only had some cold ones here, but the place is very charming. I’d love to go back to dine sometime. Reminded me of a place you would see in Key West.
• Danny Buoy’s - this is an Irish pub, hubby got the jerk chicken wrap which was very tasty and spicy. I had a burger which was really good, I don’t usually eat burgers!
• The Corner Café next to the IGA, for Starbucks addicts, this is the closest thing on the island. Great Iced Vanilla Lattes.
• Hole in the Wall - we didn’t actually go there, I would love to try this place sometime, because it sounds like great jerk chicken, peas ‘n rice, johnnycakes and fried plantains. Next time!

Beachbabyboo’s Trip Highlights:
• On our very first day, I saw Jojo! Hubby was napping on the beach and missed it. There were some kids swimming just in front of RWI and Jojo emerged a couple feet right in front of them, if only for a split second, but I was so excited! Never saw him again for the rest of the trip, but I was thankful to have seen him, even for that brief moment!
• The best thing we did was the Island Get-away excursion for $225. per couple. We booked through J&B Tours. I practically cried when I first saw the beach at Big Water Cay - it was the most beautiful beach I have ever seen in my entire life!     I felt like I was transported into one of those island calendar photos! My husband felt the same way. The blue of the water was blinding! Anyway, they take you by boat and drop you off on a private stretch of beach for the day (all beaches are public so you may bump into other people, but most likely you won’t). They give you an umbrella or two, a couple of beach chairs, and a cooler filled with lunch - sandwiches, cookies, fruit, and a side salad, water, beer, sodas and rum punch or wine. They dropped us off at 9:45am and came back at 4:15pm - 6 1/2 hours seemed like it would have been plenty of time, right? Well no! When he showed back up, I thought only a couple of hours had passed… I couldn’t believe our time was up! I guess I was in such a state of bliss that time just ran away. We snorkeled for sand dollars and conch shells and walked both sides of the beach. There are limestone cliffs here for great photo ops. It was wonderful and I’d do it again in a heartbeat.
