Middle Caicos
Easy to get to by plane, a 15 minute flight, or by boat tour, the island is also linked by a weekend ferry service to North Caicos. At last count, 271 people live within the quaint villages of Conch Bar, Bambarra and Lorimers, united by a paved road. Over 15 miles of above-sea-level caverns are an interesting "must-see" local tour. Artifacts prove the caves were once a Lucayan indian shelter. For centuries bats have made their home here. Several Loyalist plantation ruins, a Lucayan ball court and 35 documented indian sites occupy the island waiting for excavation. More recent ruins were left by Hurricane Donna in 1960. Visit Mudjin Harbour, for a spectacular photo opportunity of the coastal bluffs. The rocks of Dragon Cay create a serene lagoon, a perfect haven for sea life, marine creatures and world class snorkelling.
A nature trail is in place. Many acres of wetland plants and wildlife are protected by the Ramsar Treaty. Resident flamingos and many species of birds live or migrate to the island. For a truly peaceful retreat, getaway to the Blue Horizon Resort. Five fully equipped spacious villas are perched with a breathtaking view overlooking Mudjin Harbour and the beach. Here you can swim, snorkel, beach comb, hike, read, write, stargaze and enjoy the total peace and quiet. There are several taxi / tour / fishing guides available. Souvenirs could include the beautiful baskets which are tightly woven from local straws and palms.
